429 Error Fix - Action Report¶
Summary¶
Successfully implemented a comprehensive fix for the 429 "Too Many Requests" error that was occurring with Google's Generative Language API.
Problem¶
The application was experiencing 429 errors when making API calls to Google's API:
09:14:26 | ERROR | core.models | API Request Error (google): 429 Client Error: Too Many Requests
requests.exceptions.HTTPError: 429 Client Error: Too Many Requests
Root Cause¶
The call_api method in core/models.py was making direct HTTP requests without:
- Retry logic for transient errors
- Exponential backoff between retries
- Provider-specific error handling
- Support for Retry-After headers
Solution Implemented¶
1. Added Retry Strategy with Exponential Backoff¶
- 5 retry attempts for 429 errors
- Exponential backoff: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 seconds
- Status codes handled: 429, 500, 502, 503, 504
- Respect Retry-After headers from API
2. Enhanced Error Handling¶
- Provider-specific messages: Google, Mistral, OpenAI get tailored messages
- User-friendly responses: Clear guidance on what to do
- Graceful degradation: Helpful messages when retries exhausted
3. Technical Implementation¶
- Added required imports:
HTTPAdapter,Retry - Implemented session-based requests with retry strategy
- Added comprehensive 429 error handling in multiple locations
- Proper session cleanup with
finallyblock
Key Improvements¶
✅ Automatic Retries: 5 attempts with exponential backoff ✅ Provider-Specific Messages: Tailored error messages for each provider ✅ Retry-After Support: Respects API's suggested wait time ✅ Better UX: Clear, actionable error messages for users ✅ Robust Error Handling: Catches 429 errors in multiple places ✅ Backward Compatible: No breaking changes to existing functionality
Testing¶
Created comprehensive test suite (test_429_fix.py) that verifies:
- ✅ Retry logic implementation with exponential backoff
- ✅ 429 error handling with user-friendly messages
- ✅ Provider-specific error messages (Google, Mistral, OpenAI)
- ✅ Retry-After header support
- ✅ Graceful error handling when retries exhausted
All tests passed! 🎉
Files Modified¶
core/models.py- Enhanced API calling with retry logic and 429 error handlingtest_429_fix.py- Comprehensive test suite for the fixdocs/action_reports/google_429_fix.md- Detailed documentation
Verification¶
- ✅ Existing tests still pass (6/7 - 1 expected failure due to missing API key)
- ✅ New functionality works correctly
- ✅ No breaking changes introduced
- ✅ Better user experience confirmed
Impact¶
Before Fix¶
User: "Hello, how are you?"
AI: "An unexpected error occurred while processing your request. Please try again."
Logs: "429 Client Error: Too Many Requests"
After Fix¶
User: "Hello, how are you?"
AI: "Google API rate limit exceeded. Please try again in 30 seconds."
Logs: "Rate limited by google API. Retry-After: 30"
Status: RESOLVED 🎉
The fix provides automatic recovery from rate limits with exponential backoff, provider-specific error messages, and graceful degradation when limits are reached.
