Plan 9 (1992): Distributed Computing¶

Bell Labs Vision:

"Your CPU can be in California, your storage in New York, your display in Tokyo. The network makes it all one system."

Why It Failed: - Too different from Unix (scared users away) - No killer app (technically superior ≠ market success) - Poor timing (1992 networks too slow) - No commercial backing (AT&T breakup)

What Happened: - ✅ Technology succeeded (P2P works!) - ❌ Legally destroyed (RIAA lawsuit, 2001) - ❌ Replaced by centralization (iTunes, Spotify) - ❌ Users lost (subscriptions instead of ownership) - ❌ Sharing became "piracy" (criminalized)

Why It Failed: - Central index = single point of failure (legal target) - Record labels sued it to death - Replaced with "legal" alternatives (DRM, streaming) - Users traded freedom for convenience

Problem: Need exchanges to buy Bitcoin → KYC → surveillance
