🌀 NeXuS Medusa Proxy - Implementation Summary

Date: February 13-14, 2026 Mission: Build censorship-resistant automagical multi-network mesh Status: ✅ CORE IMPLEMENTATION COMPLETE

What We Built

🎯 Vision Achieved

"If blocked at one port, auto-route to another network"

We transformed the original Tor-only medusa-proxy into a self-healing multi-network anonymity system that automatically fails over when censored or blocked.

1. Multi-Network Support

  • Tor (5+ instances) - Primary network, load balanced via HAProxy
  • Snowflake - Pluggable transport helping censored users
  • I2P (2+ instances) - Anonymous P2P network for .i2p domains
  • Yggdrasil - Encrypted IPv6 mesh network
  • Reticulum - Cryptographic mesh networking stack

2. Automagical Smart Router (proxy/smart_router.py)

  • ✅ Continuous health monitoring (every 30s)
  • ✅ Automatic failover when networks blocked
  • ✅ Protocol-specific routing (IRC→I2P, BitTorrent→I2P, etc.)
  • ✅ Performance-based decisions (latency, reliability)
  • ✅ Self-healing (retries failed networks automatically)

3. Network Implementations

Snowflake (proxy/snowflake.py) - Helps censored users connect to Tor - Runs by default on every NeXuS node - Embodies "Together Everyone Achieves More"

I2P (proxy/i2p.py, templates/i2pd.conf) - SOCKS proxy on port 11000+ - HTTP proxy on port 12000+ - Console API on port 17000+ - Participating router (helps I2P network) - Health checking via console API

Yggdrasil (proxy/yggdrasil.py, templates/yggdrasil.conf) - IPv6 mesh networking - Admin API on port 9001+ - Peering on port 6000+ - Health checking via admin JSON-RPC - Decentralized routing

Reticulum (proxy/reticulum.py, templates/reticulum.conf) - Cryptographic networking stack - Management port 4965+ - UDP/TCP transport support - Transport node (routes for others) - Self-organizing topology

4. Unified Launcher (nexus-start.py)

  • "One script to run them all" - launches all networks
  • Registers networks with SmartRouter
  • Continuous health monitoring
  • Original Privoxy/HAProxy/Tor functionality preserved
  • Status display every check interval

5. Configuration-Based Routing (routing-rules.yaml)

  • NO deep packet inspection (privacy-respecting)
  • Domain-based rules (.i2p → I2P, .onion → Tor)
  • Protocol-based rules (IRC, BitTorrent, Matrix)
  • Application-specific rules (DeltaChat, OnionShare, RetroShare, Briar)
  • Configurable failover chains

Network Priority Chain

Default routing preference: 1. Tor (priority 10) - Fastest, most established 2. Snowflake (priority 15) - Tor with bridges 3. I2P (priority 20) - Good for P2P 4. Yggdrasil (priority 30) - Mesh network 5. Reticulum (priority 40) - Cryptographic mesh

Dockerfile Update (Task #10)

  • Add all network dependencies (i2pd, yggdrasil, rnsd, snowflake-proxy)
  • Update Alpine Linux package list
  • Status: Needed for Docker deployment
