The Hardware

The NeXuS forge runs on real hardware. Screaming demons, not cloud instances.

Retiring:     HP ProBook 4530s — Core i3, 8GB, Intel HD 3000
              Keyboard ribbon going out — served its time

Rising:       Dell Latitude E6520 (x2) — Core i7, 8GB
              Intel HD 3000 + NVS 4200M Optimus
              Dual drive bays, working battery
              The screaming demon lives on

Headless:     HP Envy m4 — cracked screen
              Potential node, external monitor pending

Philosophy:   Old hardware is not a limitation.
              It is proof the stack is lean enough to matter.

The Install Vision

Two profiles. One philosophy.

PROFILE 1 — FULL INSTALL
  LUKS2 (mandatory, no bypass)
    → LVM (expandable, never run out of space)
      → BTRFS (snapshots, compression, self-healing)
        → NeXuS

PROFILE 2 — FRUGAL (run from RAM)
  Three modes:
    Amnesiac   — one medium, no trace left behind
    Persistent — two mediums, your NeXuS follows you
    Hybrid     — USB boot + LUKS2 encrypted disk persistence

BOOTLOADER: Limine
  Modern, fast, BIOS + UEFI
  Full framebuffer eye candy from first pixel
  NeXuS fire aesthetic before the OS even loads

The ISO and the scripts produce identical systems. The hash proves it. Cryptographically. No trust required.


The Framebuffer Discovery

Already proven. Already working.

Framebuffer stack — PROVEN on real hardware:
  ✅ Video — working
  ✅ Images — working
  ✅ Audio — working
  ✅ Qt apps — friendly, updated, framebuffer native
  ✅ Resource usage — comparable to labwc/sway
  ✅ Limine — boots clean with eye candy

Profile 3 — FRAMEBUFFER:
  No Wayland required
  No GPU driver headaches
  Maximum hardware compatibility
  Runs on anything with a framebuffer
  Qt is the app framework of choice

The framebuffer fix — no root required:

The Group Permission Problem

Every group is an attack surface. NeXuS treats them that way.

DANGEROUS GROUPS:
  video    — framebuffer, screen capture possible
  audio    — microphone, silent recording possible
  input    — keyboard/mouse, keylogger possible
  usb      — raw USB, device injection possible
  disk     — raw disk, bypass filesystem possible
  wheel    — doas/sudo, full root escalation
  kvm      — hypervisor, VM escape possible
  render   — GPU, VRAM scraping possible

The NeXuS installer principle:

Every group = explicit opt-in
Every opt-in = security tradeoff explained
Nothing added silently
Informed consent baked into the install

Containers cover most of it — but not all:

Containers solve:       app/network/filesystem/process isolation
Containers don't solve: /dev/fb0, /dev/snd, USB passthrough,
                        KVM access, Wayland socket

The answer is layers — not one solution, all of them together.


The Microservice Security Stack

Amazon's Firecracker + iptables + Medusa = the NeXuS service isolation architecture.

FIRECRACKER microVM
  Each service gets its own tiny VM
  Boots in ~125ms, ~5MB overhead
  Own kernel — kernel exploit = contained
  Stripped down — no BIOS, no PCI, no USB
  KVM based — hardware virtualization
iptables / nftables
  Controls exactly what enters and leaves each microVM
  Whitelist only — deny everything else
  Per-service rules, not per-host
Rootless Podman
  Lighter services that don't need microVM isolation
  Container root ≠ host root
Medusa routing
  Tor + I2P + Yggdrasil
  Traffic leaves anonymized
PSAD + fwsnort + fail2ban
  Watching everything
  Anomaly detection
  Auto-block on suspicious patterns

Per-service isolation:

Each Oracle service    → own Firecracker microVM
Each AI model          → own Firecracker microVM
Each node service      → own Firecracker microVM
Tor daemon             → own Firecracker microVM
I2P daemon             → own Firecracker microVM

A compromised service: - Can't reach other services (Firecracker walls) - Can't phone home (iptables whitelist) - Can't be traced (Medusa anonymizes) - Gets caught trying (PSAD watching)


The Reproducible Build Promise

One script family. Five modes. Every mode: - LUKS2 mandatory — no insecure option exists - Hash signed — cryptographically verifiable - Scripts are the source of truth — ISO built FROM scripts - Anyone can reproduce — run the scripts, get the same hash

Verifiable truth or nothing.


What Was Said
